NEW EXTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY FOR FALL 2021

Post by AdvocacyInstitute »

Still looking to gain practical experience and earn 3 credits at the same time? Below is a new and exciting externship opportunity for the fall 2021 semester!

The Education Advocacy Project at the Legal Aid Bureau of Buffalo, Inc., is looking for a highly-motivated extern to support its new Holistic School Discipline Diversion & Intervention Project. Externs will work closely with the project’s founding attorney, Carly Hite, to represent Buffalo Public Schools students in suspension hearings, special education proceedings, and related matters (e.g., linkages with social services agencies). Externs also will engage in cross-systems policy advocacy aimed at building a district-wide, trauma-informed suspension diversion program.

As part of our ongoing efforts to better understand, connect with, and serve our clients, the Education Advocacy Project is committed to creating a diverse, inclusive workforce. Given the demands of building this new program, a background in education and/or social work is helpful, but we also encourage and value applicants with unique contributions in terms of ethnicity, race, sex, gender identity and expression, nation of origin, age, languages spoken, veteran’s status, religion, disability, sexual orientation, and systems involvement (e.g., child welfare, income maintenance, juvenile and criminal justice, mental health, Medicaid).

To apply, please email a single-page resume to chite@legalaidbuffalo.org.

For any questions about the project, please email Carly Hite at chite@legalaidbuffalo.org.

For any questions about the Externship Program, please email Dawn Skopinski at skopinsk@buffalo.edu.
