Presented by the UB College of Arts and Sciences Distinguished Visiting Scholars Program, Baldy Center for Law and Social Policy, and Immigrant and Refugee Research Institute (School of Social Work).

David Hernández (Associate Professor of Latina/o Studies and Faculty Director of Community Engagement at Mount Holyoke College)

"Whiplashed: Refugees, Detention and the 'Trump Era'"

April 26, 2022
107 Capen Hall; 3:00pm-4:30pm
This lecture will be in person and via Zoom.

With the hangover of the Trump administration receding, Hernández will reflect on the whirlwind of the “Trump era” in immigration policy. Hernández will situate the punishing and deliberately traumatic era within the longer history of immigration enforcement, comparing Trump to his predecessors and successor, and exposing a long consolidation of power over the rights of migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers.

David Hernández is associate professor of Latina/o Studies and Faculty Director of Community Engagement at Mount Holyoke College. His research focuses on immigration enforcement, and in particular the U.S. detention regime. His current book manuscript is tentatively entitled Alien Incarcerations: Immigrant Detention and Lesser Citizenship.
