Post by Pro Bono »

MPRE Test Administration: August 11 or 12, 2020
Registration Deadline: June 25, 2020

The Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination (MPRE) is a two-hour, multiple-choice examination conducted by the National Conference of Bar Examiners (NCBE) that measures a future lawyer’s knowledge of established standards for the professional conduct of lawyers.

The MPRE will be administered three times per year at established Pearson Vue test centers across the country. You must complete the NCBE portion of the registration process, schedule your test appointment with Pearson VUE, and pay the test fee by 11:59 p.m. central time on the registration deadline. Absolutely no new registrations will be accepted after the deadline.

For 2020, the MPRE will be offered:

Test Administration: August 11 or 12, 2020
Registration Deadline: June 25, 2020

Test Administration: October 23 or 28, 2020
Registration Deadline: September 14, 2020

The registration fee is $135.

Steps to register:

1. Create an NCBE account: https://accounts.ncbex.org/php/ncbe_nu ... ateAccount
2. Log into your NCBE Account, selection MPRE registration, and follow the instructions.
3. Receive an Authorization to Test email from Pearson Vue. (make sure emails from PeasronVUEconfirmation@pearson.com does not go into SPAM or Junk Mail)
4. Selection an appointment to test with Pearson VUE and pay the test fee to them.
5. Receive a Confirmation of Person VUE Exam Appointment email and a Confirmation of Payment e-mail from Pearson VUE.

You must schedule the appointment and pay the fee by the registration deadline or you will not be able to take the MPRE during that test administration.

The National Conference of Bar Examiners (NCBE) who administers the MPRE has the following statement on its web site:

NCBE COVID-19 FAQs

Will the August MPRE be administered as scheduled?

The MPRE is administered at Pearson VUE testing centers. The administration of the August 11 and 12 MPRE is dependent on the availability of Pearson VUE testing centers, which are beginning to reopen in the US. Pearson VUE is posting related updates to its website .(https://home.pearsonvue.com/coronavirus ... e-specific).

At this time, we recommend that candidates who intend to take the MPRE in August proceed with registering and scheduling a test appointment as soon as they are able. If the August MPRE cannot be administered as scheduled, we will work with candidates to ensure that their test fees can be applied to a future test administration.

Many students opt to take the MPRE in November or March of their third year of law school. They may also opt to take an Ethics course in the same semester in which they are taking the MPRE. Law students should plan to devote approximately 25 hours to preparing for the MPRE.

Accommodations. If a law student needs to request a testing accommodation under the Americans with Disabilities Act, please carefully review MPRE Test Accommodations for the relevant requirements and procedures. You must apply for MPRE test accommodations prior to registering for the MPRE.

New York State Jurisdiction. In New York, law students can take the MPRE either before or after the bar exam, however, they must pass the MPRE within three years before or after passing the New York bar exam. New York requires a score of 85 on the MPRE. Scores are scaled and range from 50 to 150, with an average of approximately 100. A raw score of approximately 32 correct out of 50 converts to a scaled score of 85.

From the New York State Bar Examiner's Bar Exam Handbook, p. 11 (emphasis added):
  • The MPRE can be taken before or after the bar examination, however, a passing MPRE score is valid four only four years. Thus, if it has been more than three years since an applicant took and passed the MPRE, the applicant will be required to re-sit and pass the MPRE before the applicant may be certified to the Appellate Division as having passed the bar examination.
Other Jurisdictions. Since the requirements for accepting an MPRE score vary from one jurisdiction to another, check with the board(s) of bar examiners in each jurisdiction to which you intend to apply before completing the MPRE application. Examination results will be forwarded to one jurisdiction of your choice and will be kept on file at the office of the National Conference of Bar Examiners in Iowa City, Iowa.
