Database Registration for Incoming Students

Post by Assoc Dir Law Lib »

Dear incoming students:
Welcome to UB! My name is Brian Detweiler and I am the Student Services & Legal Technology Librarian here at the Law School. By now you should hopefully have received a folder with database activation codes in the mail as part of your on-boarding materials. (If you are an international student, please allow a little additional time for these materials to arrive.) Once you have your folder, please register for accounts with Lexis, Westlaw, CALI, and West Academic Study Aids using your UB email addresses as soon as possible. (Please note, the West Study Aids flyer has a general URL that is kind of confusing, so please use the link on this page instead: https://research.lib.buffalo.edu/west-study-aids, sign in with your UB credentials to access the site, and use the link on the top right-hand side of the landing page to create your account.) More information about these services will be forthcoming before Orientation, so be sure to keep an eye out for future SIP announcements.
You should also have received an email from a company called Procertas this week allowing you to register for an account to become certified in legal technology. This service is optional for you, but highly recommended, particularly the sections dealing with Microsoft Word. (This certification can be added to your resume to demonstrate your competency and efficiency with office technology!)
Regardless of whether you complete your Procertas assessments, I would recommend downloading the latest version of Microsoft Office 2019 from the UB IT website: http://www.buffalo.edu/ubit/service-gui ... ading.html if you do not already own this software, or if you have an older version of it.
Please note: The University has discontinued its Symantec anti-virus software license, effective 8/13/20. Mac users can download Sophos or AVG antivirus software using the links on the UB IT website should you not already have an antivirus program installed on your machine. Windows 10 users are advised to use Windows Defender: http://www.buffalo.edu/ubit/news/articl ... etail.html I apologize for the confusion. If you already downloaded Symantec from UB IT, there is a link to uninstall on the page. Sorry for the confusion!
In the meantime, if you have any questions or issues as you register for your accounts, please do not hesitate to reach out!
Thanks and all the best,
Brian
