Dear Graduating Students:

This is a reminder that registration for the July 2021 New York Bar Examination is now open! Registration will be open until April 30 or until the limit of 10,000 examinees is reached, whichever occurs first. In a typical NY summer bar exam, there are 10,000 to 13,000 examinees, but this year there may be some pent-up demand because of the limitations put on the registration pool in the last two bar exam administrations. Therefore, it would be a good idea to register as soon as possible, before 10,000 other examinees sign up ahead of you.

Registration is not complex, but there are three steps involved:
Step One: Create an account with the National Conference of Bar Examiners at ncbex.org . If you have already signed up for the MPRE, you already have an account. Once you have an account, you are assigned an NCBE ID number; you will need this for Step Two.

Step Two: Create an account with the New York Board of Law Examiners at nybarexam.org . You will need to give some basic information like your name and email address, along with your NCBE ID number. Once you have an account with NY BOLE, you will be assigned a BOLE ID number, which you will use to access your account in the future.

Step Three: Log into your BOLE account (or click through the "Online Application" link at the bottom of the main nybarexam.org page). Once the application goes live, you will be able to access it from your BOLE account page. The application to take the bar exam only asks for some basic information, and then you will be directed to make payment. Once you have made payment, you can complete the application and you will be all set for now.

Shortly after the registration period closes, all registrants will receive additional information about how to register your computer and download the necessary software. There is no need to worry about that next step yet.

BOLE is expecting "high demand on the first day of the filing period and some applicants may need to try back later if they are not able to access the application in the first few hours". So you may need to be patient registering. BOLE does expect "higher than normal demand", but "do not believe it will close out in the first few days of the application filing period", so there is no need to panic if you cannot get through right away. Still, BOLE estimates that the registration period will close no later than mid-April, though, so the sooner you register, the better.

Very truly yours,
Professor MacDonald
