Important information for the New York Bar Exam Application

REGISTRATION FOR THE NEW YORK BAR EXAMINATION BEGINS THIS MONDAY, APRIL 1, 2019. Registration runs from April 1 – April 30, 2019. There is NO provision for late registration. If you miss the registration window, you will be taking the February 2020 bar exam of traveling to Alaska or Maine to take the UBE.

(1) APPLICATION FOR THE JULY 2019 BAR EXAMINATION

The July bar examination is New York will be given on Tuesday, July 30 and Wednesday, July 31, 2019.

The application period for the July 2019 bar exam opens on Monday, April 1, 2018 and closes at 11:59 pm on Tuesday, April 30, 2019. The “online application” link at the bottom of the Board of Law Examiners web site will become live when applications are available .

The following are some important reminders before completing the online bar exam application. DO THIS NOW:

From the Board of Law Examiners web site (www.nybarexam.org):

"Applicants much apply for the bar examination through their BOLE Account in the Applicant Services Portal when the application filing period opens on April 1. If you do not have an account, click on BOLE Account in the table of contents and follow the instructions to create a BOLE Account. You must apply under your legal name which must match exactly the name on the official government photo identification you will present on exam day."


To create a BOLE (Board of Law Examiners) Account: First-time applicants must create a BOLE account using a valid email address. Re-Applicants must use their existing BOLE accounts. To create a BOLE account go to: https://portal.nybarexam.org/

If you already have an NCBE Number, do not request a new number as your existing NCBE Number will be saved from your previous application. Please visit http://www.ncbex.org/ncbe-number and complete the brief application to receive your NCBE Number. The Board will verify with NCBE the validity of the NCBE Number that you enter on your application. If you enter an invalid NCBE Number, your application may be nullified, and you may be subject to misconduct for furnishing misleading or inaccurate information.

The fee for the New York Bar Examination is $750 for LLM graduates. You will need a credit card – Master Card or Visa, to apply to take the New York State Bar Examination (the UBE, Uniform Bar Examination) in July.

“Foreign-Educated LLM Applicants: Foreign-Educated applicants who are required under Court of Appeals Rule 520.6 to complete an LL.M. degree at an approved law school in the United States MUST complete the online Foreign Evaluation Form and submit all of their foreign documentation to the Board at least six months prior to the first day of the application filing period for the exam for which they will apply.”

Deadline to submit supporting foreign documentation for review:

July Bar Exam To meet the six month deadline for review of your documents, you must submit your Foreign Evaluation Form and supporting foreign documentation no later than October 1st of the year preceding the exam you plan to sit.

February Exam To meet the six month deadline for review of your documents, you must submit your Foreign Evaluation Form and supporting documentation no later than May 1st of the year preceding the exam you plan to sit.

LLM applicants who fail to meet these deadlines run the risk that they may not receive a decision from the Board on their eligibility in time to take the exam, causing the application to be denied and the application fee to be forfeited.
