Two law students NEEDED - Mediation Tournament in NYC 3/20-22

Post by AdvocacyInstitute »

TWO LAW STUDENTS NEEDED FOR A MEDIATION TOURNAMENT!

Two (2) law students are still needed to represent a UB Law team of three (3) at the the NYS Bar Association's Mediation Tournament to be held in NYC the weekend of March 20-22, 2020.

It is a really great competition that UB Law won last year under Coach Randy Oppenheimer, who is an experienced mediator, arbitrator and litigator from the law firm Barclay Damon. The tournament is unique, as in one round you play the mediator, one round the lawyer, and one round the client. It means meeting with your teammates and Coach Oppenheimer at mutually agreed upon times a couple of times a week between mid-February and mid-March. It is a great learning experience in developing your negotiation and mediation skills! The Advocacy Institute covers the cost of registration, your transportation, food and lodging. AND, there are cash awards. Our team won money last year with coming in 1st place and winning best mediator! It would also be a great resume builder!

So far we have one student who is interested, and we need two more! Students who competed in the Representation in Mediation Competition held in November OR was in Professor Steve Sugarman's mediation class OR in Christen Civiletto's ADR class will be given preference. Please let Professor Sugarman know as soon as possible if you have an interest. His email is ssugarman@psasattorneys.com.

Subject: MEDIATION TOURNAMENT REGISTRATION GONE LIVE!

The New York State Bar Association's Dispute Resolution Section has announced the nationwide expansion of its Annual Mediation Tournament. The Tournament which launched in March of 2019, was previously only open to law schools and LLM students based in the New York Metro area, now with the launch of its 2nd Annual Tournament scheduled for March 20-21, 2020 at the offices of the AAA-ICDR and NYIAC in New York City, the NYSBA has opened the Tournament to law schools and LLM students nationwide.

The Tournament is unique in that it enables three-member teams of law students to develop and display both advanced mediation and advocacy skills while participating as mediators, advocates and in-house client representatives. The event is judged by a respected group of experienced mediators and practitioners and a variety of cash prizes are awarded to the winning team teams and mediator.

"This is a truly wonderful opportunity for the students to earn valuable mediation experience, receive evaluations on their skills from some of the most respected experts in the field, and to network with top industry legal talents", said Leslie Berkoff, Co-Chair of the Mediation Committee of the Dispute Resolution Section of the New York State Bar Association and a partner at Moritt Hock & Hamroff LLP, who developed and launched the Tournament and is spearheading its expansion.
