Stay out of Trouble--Lexis & Westlaw Summer Access Policies

Post by Assoc Dir Law Lib »

Hi everyone,

Here are the summer and post-graduate access policies for Lexis and Westlaw. If you have any questions, please let me know!

Lexis Advance
Summer Access Details - For Returning Students:
Your Lexis ID stays on automatically (no need to register, can be used for any purpose during summer—work or academic use—for unlimited hours).

Lexis Advance Details - For Graduating Students:
Your Lexis ID stays on automatically through 12/31/2020; use for any purpose:
  • studying for the bar
  • working
  • sharpening skills
  • researching employers
Note: graduating students must spend their Lexis points by 6/30/20; Starting 7/1/20, any graduating student who has verifiable employment with a non-profit organization can apply via the Lexis ASPIRE program for 12 months of free Lexis access. Students can visit http://www.lexisnexis.com/grad-access for details on either of these offers.

Westlaw
Summer Access Details – For Returning Students:
Students can use Thomson Reuters products, including Westlaw and Practical Law over the summer for non-commercial research. You can turn to these resources to gain understanding and build confidence in your research skills, but you cannot use them in situations where you are billing a client. Examples of permissible uses for student academic accounts include the following:
  • Summer Coursework
  • Research assistant assignments
  • Law Review or Journal research
  • Moot Court research
  • Non-Profit work
  • Clinical work
  • Externship sponsored by the law school
Students do not have to do anything to gain access to these tools over the summer. You will be notified directly if you exceed your Westlaw summer usage, or if there are any issues.

Westlaw Grad Elite Details – For Graduating Students:

Students have access to Thomson Reuters products, including Westlaw and Practical Law, for six months after graduation. Your “Grad Elite” access gives you 60 hours of usage on these products per month to gain understanding and build confidence in your research skills. While you cannot use Westlaw and Practical Law in situations where you are billing a client, Thomson Reuters encourages you to use these tools to build your knowledge of the law and prepare for the bar exam.

In addition, students get access to job searching databases on Westlaw and TWEN for 18 months after graduation for one hour a month.

You can extend your access by logging into https://lawschool.westlaw.com/authentication/gradelite and selecting that you want to enroll in the Grad Elite program when you see a pop-up window after you sign on. If you do not see the Grad Elite option, please contact your Westlaw Account Manager at stacy.donnelly@thomsonreuters.com.

Lastly, just a reminder that your friendly reference librarians will be available via phone (716-645-2047), email (asklaw@buffalo.edu) or Zoom over the summer Monday through Friday from 10-4 to help you with any research questions that arise during your internships or as you begin your legal careers. We are here to help!
