Repeal 50-a: A Petition Uniting the New York State Law School Community - 06/08

Post by SBA »

Dear UB Community:

Section 50-a is a New York law that keeps police disciplinary records hidden from public view. Only two other states (CA and DE) exempt officers from public records law. However, NY's law is more expansive than both CA and DE. Those who support 50-a argue that releasing public records would delegitimize the police department and lead to harassment of officers. However, the repeal of 50-a would lead to more accountability and trust in the system.

If the NY law schools spoke out against a NY law to our state legislature, that would speak major volumes.

The state legislature is meeting next week to discuss criminal justice reform, so please sign https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIp ... A/viewform as soon as you can to show support in repealing 50-a. The form will be closed on Monday, June 8. Time is of the essence.

This letter will be sent to Gov. Cuomo, Temporary President of the State Senate, Majority Leader of the State Senate, Minority Leader of the State Senate, Speaker of the Assembly, Majority Leader of the Assembly, and Minority Leader of the Assembly.
