Database Information for Incoming Students

Post by Assoc Dir Law Lib »

Hi everyone,
Hopefully you have received your database registration folders along with your on-boarding materials already, but if not, they should be arriving soon! The folders will contain registration cards for Lexis, Westlaw, CALI, and West Academic Study Aids. Please follow the directions on the enclosed cards and register for accounts using your UB email address.
Lexis and Westlaw are the two most prominent legal research databases in the United States. You will use one or both of them throughout your careers as attorneys, so please feel free to have a look around once you have registered! Both databases also provide access to classroom management software ("Lexis Classroom" and "TWEN" on Westlaw) that your professors may use for their courses, so please do sign up for your accounts before Orientation!
For more details on getting started with Lexis and Westlaw, please watch the following videos prepared by our account representatives:
Lexis (Celine Murphy) https://relx.zoom.us/rec/share/tctzMb-h ... ugyhPIWMhA
Westlaw (Stacy Donnelly) https://youtu.be/VtWmgnjO2gQ
Meanwhile, you can use your accounts through CALI and West Study Aids throughout the semester to ensure you understand the material that is being covered in your classes. CALI uses online lessons to walk you through some of the legal concepts you will cover in your doctrinal courses while our West Study Aids subscription (https://research.lib.buffalo.edu/west-study-aids) provides you with electronic access to study aids, which explain the often complex concepts discussed in the cases you read for class in a much more clear and concise manner. In short, they are an invaluable tool for building your outlines and preparing for your exams!
I hope you are all enjoying your last few weeks of summer; if you have any questions about accessing any of these resources, please do not hesitate to reach out.
All the best,
Brian
