Class of '23, Please Read!: Continuing Lexis and Westlaw Access and Future Westlaw Campus Access through UB Law Library

Post by Assoc Dir Law Lib »

Dear Class of 2023,
Congratulations on your upcoming graduation!! I wanted to share some details on post-graduation access to Lexis and Westlaw, and also let you know that the Law Library subscribes to a different version of Westlaw called Westlaw Campus Research that will be accessible any time you come back and visit us: https://research.lib.buffalo.edu/westla ... s-research. This database is only available to you on-site after you graduate, but it has all of the same primary law resources and the same ability to update primary law using KeyCite that you would find through your current account. The only practical difference is that it offers a somewhat more limited library of secondary sources. If you sign in using the link above (be sure to use a different browser if you are already logged into your law school Westlaw account in your usual browser), you can see their NY Secondary Materials here: https://1.next.westlaw.com/Browse/Home/ ... c.Default) and their NY Treatises here: https://1.next.westlaw.com/Browse/Home/ ... c.Default). It's actually pretty decent, right? I highly recommend checking the site out now if you are going to be opening your own office or working for a smaller firm in town where research costs can be an issue.
Regardless of where you end up, our friendly and dedicated reference librarians are always happy to help our alumni(!), so please give us a call at (716) 645-2047 or email us at asklaw@buffalo.edu if you ever get stuck researching an issue in practice. We have many decades of legal research experience between us and will likely be able to point you in the right direction quickly!

Finally, here is the post-graduation access info for your Lexis and Westlaw accounts:
Lexis+
Graduating Students:
Your Lexis ID stays on automatically through 12/31/2023, and can be used for any purpose:
  • studying for the bar
  • working
  • sharpening skills
  • researching employers
Note: There is a deadline by which you must spend your Lexis points. Any graduating student who has verifiable employment with a non-profit organization can apply via Lexis ASPIRE program for 12 months of free Lexis access. Students can visit http://www.lexisnexis.com/grad-access for details on either of these offers.

Westlaw Precision
Westlaw Grad Elite Details – For Graduating Students:
Graduates have access to Thomson Reuters products, including Westlaw and Practical Law, for six-months after graduation. Your “ Grad Elite” access gives you 60-hours of usage on these products per month to gain understanding, prepare for the bar exam, and build confidence in your research skills. **YOU MUST OPT IN FOR GRAD ELITE ACCESS** To extend your access, please visit: https://lawschool.westlaw.com/authentication/gradelite
IMPORTANT: SIGN OUT of Westlaw when research is complete in order to make the best use of the 60-hour per month allotment. DO NOT simply close the browser, because it can take up to 90 minutes to be signed off automatically. There is NO way to extend the 60-hour limit.

As always, if you have any questions now or in the future, please don't hesitate to reach out! On behalf of everyone here in the Law Library, it has been a pleasure working with you all : )
