Spring 2024 Undergraduate Internship Program

Undergraduate Internship Opportunity
Franklin H. Williams Judicial Commission of the New York State Courts

The Franklin H. Williams Judicial Commission of the New York State Courts is composed of judges, attorneys and court administrators appointed by the Chief Judge of the State of New York to promote equal access and full participation in the court system by persons and communities of color in the judicial process.

More than thirty years ago, the Williams Commission became America's first court-based commission established to eliminate racial bias in the legal system. It is a permanent independent commission of the New York State Courts, with a mandate to advance equal justice and promote diversity and inclusion within the judiciary, legal profession, and court workforce.

As part of ongoing efforts to serve as a pipeline to the legal profession, the Franklin H. Williams Judicial Commission is offering an eight-week unpaid spring internship for undergraduate students interested in the law. The program is open to all undergraduate students. Interns will meet judges and attorneys from various practice areas, develop research and writing skills, and build project management skills. For any college students considering law school, this will be an invaluable experience.

The internship will be hybrid (with a virtual component and in-person component hosted at our New York City office) from March 4, 2024 through April 26, 2024. Interns are expected to participate for a minimum of 10 hours weekly. All applications must be received by January 31, 2024.

The Williams Commission advises and educates New York Court system decision-makers on issues affecting both employees and litigants of color, implements practical recommendations, and issues reports. Interns will use their writing and research skills to address diversity in the legal profession, implicit bias, equal access to justice, and other related topics.
