New Minors: Logic, Philosophy, and the Scientific Method, Applied Ontology, and AI Ethics

The College of Arts and Sciences and the Department of Philosophy are excited to introduce three new minors that invite students to explore emerging fields through diverse intellectual lenses:

Logic, Philosophy, and the Scientific Method Minor: Strengthen critical thinking and gain insight into the logical foundations of scientific inquiry. The goal of this minor program is to provide students with an in-depth understanding of the philosophical foundations of science, including the methods, practices, and commitments of scientists.

Applied Ontology Minor: Delve into the structure of knowledge, including understanding how concepts are defined, organized, and linked across disciplines and technologies. The goals of this minor program are to provide students with the skills to create, evaluate, and maintain ontologies using established standards, such as the Basic Formal Ontology (BFO); so that they can learn to effectively collaborate with subject-matter experts to create solutions for organizing data in a variety of research domains, including data management, information architecture, and AI development.

AI Ethics Minor: Gain an in-depth understanding of the ethics and politics of AI. The goal of this minor program is to introduce students to core concepts in ethics and political philosophy so that they can learn how to use these tools to normatively evaluate different uses and abuses of AI technologies.

Each minor offers valuable perspectives for students in any major, enriching their academic experience and preparing them for complex problem-solving in a rapidly evolving world. Students are encouraged to learn more and explore how these programs can align with their academic and career aspirations.
