Work Abroad this Summer! NYSBA International Internships

Post by CSO »

The New York State Bar Association International Section and the University at Buffalo School of Law announces the 2020 Law Student International Internship Program.

The 2020 Program is in the process of securing internships for U.S. law students in law firms around the world, including: Vienna; Buenos Aires; Mexico City; San Jose (Costa Rica); Asuncion; Panama City; London and other potential placements.

The internships last from four to eight weeks. The participating law firms will provide the student intern with mentoring and introductory-level work experience. These experiences will vary; in the past student interns have fulfilled work assignments in various business, commercial and financial matters. They have participated in client meetings, prepared and reviewed legal documents, conducted research, and assisted with the firms’ English language legal and marketing materials.

Students who are eligible include those who will have finished their second year of law school in Spring 2020 and possibly those who will graduate in Spring 2020. While fluency in the local language in the internship city is not required, proficiency especially in Spanish, French, German or Italian is strongly recommended and applications from those with some level of proficiency will be favored over those without. In addition, weight will be afforded to students who have previously demonstrated interest in international, transnational and comparative law as evidenced in their course work, extracurricular activities and pre-law school experiences. Academic achievement will also be weighed.

The internships are unpaid. (Applicable immigration and labor laws generally prohibit or complicate compensation of non-citizens for work.) The New York State Bar Association will provide partial financial assistance with travel costs. Students interested in such assistance should include a simple written request in their application materials. Most, though not necessarily all, of the participating law firms will provide housing and some meal support for the duration of the internship. The exact dates of the internships and terms will vary among the firms and may be agreed upon between the firm and the chosen student.

Selected interns will be expected to join the NYSBA as student members and its International Law Section (no additional charge). They should also be willing to start or become involved with a Law Student Chapter at their law school during their third year.

Interested students should provide a detailed letter of interest, curriculum vitae, and transcript. Letters of interest should include foreign language fluency or proficiency, pre-law school and/or extracurricular activities demonstrating your interest in international law and business affairs, and any experience working, studying or otherwise living or traveling abroad. While available placements have not yet been finalized, please also indicate your preferences for placement, if any, based on geography or specific city (e.g. “anywhere Spanish-speaking” or “particularly interested in Vienna”). Note that you are more likely to obtain a placement if you indicate more than one location of interest. If you have questions, please contact Professor Meredith Kolsky Lewis at mlewis5@buffalo.edu.

Application materials should be uploaded to the posting in LOCK by February 14, 2020. Direct link to the posting (login to LOCK required): https://law-buffalo.12twenty.com/job-po ... 9904015597
