Fall 2020 Trial Team Tryouts Sat. 4/18 and Info Session Mon. 3/30

Rising 2L and 3L Students:
We hope you are interested in trying out for UB Law's Trial Team for Fall 2020. We will be meeting for try outs Saturday, April 18 at 9 a.m. in Room 12 in the basement of UB Law. PLEASE RSVP TO RESERVE A SPOT TO JRSCHARF@BUFFALO.EDU.
NOTE: Trial Team is a credit-bearing class called "Trial Advocacy", and it is by-invitation-only after try-outs (3 credits per semester for up to 6 credit hours, however you are not required to register for credit to be on a trial team). Trial Teams compete in National Competitions against other top tier trial schools. Trial Team meets various evenings during the week (to the schedule of your coaches and you -- we typically ask you to leave Tuesday and Thursday nights available for practices) and at least one weekend day during competition season; practices typically start in the beginning of the school year and run through mid- to late-October. In Fall 2020 there will be an OPTIONAL tethered class focusing on each Trial Team problem with intensive evidence and substantive law practice called Advanced Trial Skills (during the school day) -- this course will be open *only* to trial team students.
Veteran trial team students will be holding an information session about what to expect when you are on a trial team on Monday, March 30, 2020 at 5:00 pm in Room 104 O'Brian.
At try outs on April 18, you will be expected to conduct an Opening Statement (for either Prosecution or Defense) and a Cross-Examination (of any witness) in the Worthington case (attached). Veteran Trial Team students will be playing the witnesses, and you should be prepared to do an impeachment during your cross-examination.
You will circulate between two different rooms (Room 8 and Room 10) - one room for Openings, one room for Cross-Examinations.
You will be conducting your Openings and Cross-Examinations in front Trial Team Instructors/Coaches.
Once you have completed both an opening and a cross-examination, you are free to leave.
You will be notified by email if you made a trial team. Please note that we have a lot more students wanting to participate than spaces on teams -- if you do not make a team this semester, we strongly encourage you to try out again at the end of the semester for a Spring team!
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call or email. If you would like to try out but April 18 is impossible for you, please let us know, and we will try to accommodate. We strongly prefer that you try out on April 18, however, as we will have a number of coaches present at that time, and it will assist in team formation for those who have been selected.
