Important Message from Law-IT Regarding Computer Security
Posted: Sun Mar 29, 2020 2:43 pm
Dear Students,
I would like to remind you, that during this difficult time, there are nefarious actors that will take advantage of the ongoing situation. This is an unfortunate reality that we all must deal with and I am requesting that you remain vigilant and review your emails with a critical eye. Please remember when you receive a questionable email, the best response and practice is to press the delete key. Phishing attempts, similar to the ones that took place on Saturday, may increase as the COVID-19 crisis continues. To manage computer security, remember:
• UBIT will not ask you by email to upgrade your UBIT account or to proceed with any other action on your account.
• No law school or university administrative official, faculty member, or staff member will contact you requesting personal information via email.
• Alleged UB officials asking for help, if you are available, a phone number, an email response, or anything similar are all phishing attempts for information. Such e-mails should be deleted!
• Never click on a link or download any file attachments, especially from a suspicious email.
• For more specific information on how to identify and deal with spam and phishing attempts please visit UBIT’s page on Phishing Scams and IT Security Alerts: http://www.buffalo.edu/ubit/news/alerts ... urity.html
Concerning PC and Mac security, remember to run updates for your operating systems and security features as required. Please also remember to keep your endpoint antivirus protection up-to-date. If you require software upgrades, please visit the UBIT software page: http://www.buffalo.edu/ubit/service-gui ... tware.html. Remember you have already paid for this software with your technology fee.
