Hello from the CSO!

We hope your fall is getting off to a great start. To help you with your job search in these unusual times, we have 5 tips to help you keep you on track!

1. Set up your Email Alerts in LOCK. Run a search using the student group filter for your class year and click on "Turn on Email Alerts for this Search." LOCK will send you weekly digests with all the new jobs for your class! No more worrying about whether you missed an important job posting!

2. Overapply! Are you feeling on the fence about applying for some employers with grade or class-rank cutoffs? Go for it anyway! It is likely that your current GPA would be higher than it is now if you had gotten letter grades last spring. These firms, listed in LOCK, are worth reaching for:
DLA Piper: 11/21
Milbank: 10/7
McGuire Woods: 10/7

3. Think about new cities. In a tightening market, consider locations slightly outside your original plan.
Here are some great opportunities for next summer with immediate deadlines in LOCK:
Bond, Schoeneck & King (multiple offices): 9/30
Bousquet Holstein (Syracuse, Ithaca, NYC): 10/2
Hancock & Estabrook (Syracuse): says 12/31 but is intending to close earlier
Hinman, Howard & Katell (Binghamton): 10/5 (hired one of our students last year who never thought she’d leave WNY)

4. Look at practice areas that you had not yet considered, but may be a great starting point for your career. For example, public defense will give you great courtroom experience if you want to transition to another type of litigation later.
Here are some current postings you may not have considered:
US Department of the Interior: 10/1
Insurance & Annuities Intern, Ayco - A Goldman Sachs Company: 10/31
Prisoners Legal Services: 11/13 (hiring ASAP)

5. Consider a school-year job or externship. Don't forget that summer isn't the only time to get experience! Credit-bearing externships and clinics are a great way to add to your resume. Part-time law clerk positions with law firms are also a great way to get paid and may possibly lead to a more permanent job in the future. Some are even remote!
Some current part-time immediate law clerk positions in LOCK:
Cole Sorrentino: 10/15
Drew & Carr: 10/2
Steiner & Blotnik: 10/16
Wray & Associates (remote, Baton Rouge, LA): 10/15

As always, keep in touch with the CSO!
