Summer Acess to Lexis and Westlaw

Post by Assoc Dir Law Lib »

Hi everyone,
Please find the access policies for Lexis+ and Westlaw Precision below. And please remember to reach out to your friendly reference librarians should you get stuck on any tough research assignments this summer by emailing asklaw@bufalo.edu or calling us at (716) 645-2384. We are here to help you!!

Summer Lexis+ Access for Returning Students:
Your Lexis ID stays on automatically (no need to register, can be used for any purpose during summer—work or academic use—for unlimited hours).

The policy on the use of LexisNexis legal education educational IDs states:
"Summer Access is available to all law students once classes end for the semester/academic year, for the summer months of May-August. [D]uring this period the permissible uses of [students'] LexisNexis law school educational ID are expanded to include use at any law firm, government agency, court or other legal position, internship, externship or clerkship...."

The full policy is available at https://www.lexisnexis.com/en-us/terms/educational.page. If you have any questions, please contact UB's Lexis Representative, Celine Conway at celine.conway@lexisnexis.com.

Summer Westlaw Precision Access for Returning Students:
You can use Thomson Reuters products, including Westlaw and Practical Law, over the summer for non-commercial research. You can turn to these resources to gain understanding and build confidence in your research skills, but you cannot use them in situations where you are billing a client. Examples of permissible uses for your academic password include the following:
  • Summer coursework
  • Research assistant assignments
  • Law Review or Journal research
  • Moot Court research
  • Non-Profit work
  • Clinical work
  • Externship sponsored by the law school
You do not have to do anything to gain access to these tools over the summer. If you have any questions, please contact UB’s new Thomson Reuters Academic Account Manager, Estee Waxman at estee.waxman@thomsonreuters.com.

Good luck this summer! We look forward to seeing you again in August.
