Volunnteer to help asylum seekers fill out their application

Post by Undergraduate Law BA »

Are you looking to develop your work skills while helping others?

We are looking for students to help individuals seeking asylum to complete the first part of their application for asylum. Students would be asked to interview the individual or family to help them answer the questions on the first four pages of an asylum application. Students who are bilingual would be welcome to help interpret or to provide direct assistance. Spanish is the primary language, but other bilingual students are welcome. The Buffalo site also needs translators in Pular (Mauritania) and Arabic.

All students will receive training before they begin their service. Services would be in Buffalo, Rochester and Albany starting in late February and continuing. You would let me know where you would be willing to participate.

We are committed to show that the students, faculty, and staff of SUNY are willing to help provide access to justice and help our fellow men, women and children.

If interested, or of you have any questions or concerns, please contact Melinda Saran, Asylum Project Coordinator and Vice Dean for Undergraduate Law Student Affairs at saran@buffalo.edu., or in 422 O’Brian
