Center for Excellence in Writing (CEW)

Whatever your major or assignment, the Center for Excellence in Writing is here for you - Undergraduate Students!

Take advantage of the individual writing consultation service, held in 17 Norton. 45 minutes devoted to you! You can make up to three appointments per week! They have In-person and Zoom appointments.
  • Every discipline, field, workplace and community uses writing as a tool to achieve its purposes.
  • If you find writing projects to be among some of the most stressful experiences at the university, you are not alone! There are so many choices, dilemmas and uncertainties in the writing process and each context changes up the game a bit.
  • "Talking it out" in a low-stress environment is one of the most effective ways to keep your writing process moving.
  • Writers develop by actively participating in the writing process and the communities in which writing serves as a tool.
  • Students who get involved in the CEW community are participating more and developing more! Join these hardworking, ambitious students by integrating writing consultations into your writing process!
Hot tip: Have your assignment sheet at the ready.

Tutoring and Academic Support Services (TASS)

Tutoring and Academic Support Services (TASS) helps undergraduate students raise the bar on their classroom performance by providing resources that open doors to academic success. TASS sets a new standard for academic support at UB, where you’ll find that asking for help is one of the smartest things you can do.

TASS provides the support you need to be a successful college student...
  • Academic Coaching (In-Person or Online) - Students can meet with an academic coach, one on one, to develop more successful study habits and skills. Coaches will focus on your individual needs to help you reach your goals. Topics typically discussed are time management, study skills, exam prep and motivation.
  • One-on-One Tutoring (In-Person or Online) - Students have the ability to meet one-on-one with a trained tutor. The tutor will tailor your session based on your academic needs. Tutors will help you find new ways to interpret information, synthesize knowledge, give you a new perspective. Working one-on-one with a tutor can help you overcome the rigors of college-level work or simply get a jump on things.
  • TASS in the Residence Halls - In partnership with Campus Living, TASS offers tutoring in the residence halls. Drop-In tutoring is available in the Blake Academic Center in the Ellicott Complex, in the Jones Academic Center in Governors, and in Goodyear Tutoring Center located on south campus. Tutors are available during scheduled hours offering tutoring in high-demand courses such as chemistry, physics, math and biology. Check the schedule for specific days and courses offered.
  • Peer-Assisted Learning (PAL) - UB's Peer-Assisted Learning (PAL) program, also known as Supplemental Instruction (SI), is a nontraditional form of tutoring that focuses on collaboration and group study to assist students undertaking "traditionally difficult" courses.
  • Workshops and Events - Throughout the semester students can attend and participate in TASS programming which includes workshops and other events. Workshops and events vary in topic by semester. Check for upcoming events on the TASS homepage.
  • First Generation Peer Mentoring - First-generation students are invited to join our Peer Mentoring program. You will be paired with an upperclass first-generation student who will serve as your advocate and friend. Your mentor will help guide you through your academic and personal goals in your first year.
Navigate Study Buddies

Study Buddies is a feature within the Navigate mobile app or desktop site that allows you to opt-in to connect with students in each of your classes who are interested in forming study groups. How you choose to interact can be decided by your group, whether it be in-person or virtually.
