Our Summer Public Interest Funding & Fellowships Program provides financial support for students immersed in an invaluable internship experience while providing access to justice to those that need it the most, in a broad range of emerging issues. Each summer, the hard fundraising work of the Buffalo Public Interest Law Program (BPILP) and generous donor support allows a large number of students to be selected for our fellowship program; these students have strong academic backgrounds, a dedicated heart for serving in the public interest, and a proven commitment to providing access to justice.

Currently, our Summer Public Interest Funding & Fellowships Program provides $1,500-$5,000 stipends to students with financial need who intern without pay at a nonprofit organization, governmental agency, or court in a law-related position designed to further the public interest. Funding will be given to students who work a minimum of 8 weeks, full-time work schedule (35 hours/week or 280 hours total). Students who plan to work part-time may be eligible for a pro-rated stipend.

All students who anticipate that they may want the summer stipend should apply as soon as they know where they will be interning. Funding will be provided on a rolling basis. You may apply for funding even if you have not yet secured a firm offer for a summer position. Just indicate the proposed employer and the current status of your candidacy. However, proof of an offer from the employer will be required before your award is disbursed.
