TH102: American Popular Entertainments, Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour

Tu/Th 11:00 - 12:20 pm in Fronczak Hall 422, Dr. Meredith Conti, Department of Theatre and Dance

As Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour continues its global journey in 2024, the students of TH 102 will spend the fall semester investigating the tour as an American popular entertainment of contemporary cultural significance. Using concepts from the fields of theatre and performance studies, we will dive deeply into the theatrical, aesthetic, and affective impacts of the Eras Tour. We will analyze the tour’s performances, narrative structure, musical compositions, choreography, design elements, audiences, publicity, and merchandise, as well as assess critical responses to Taylor Swift and the tour in print, television, and social media. Students will have the opportunity to research people, places, and things relevant to the study of the Eras Tour (friendship bracelets, the “22” hat recipients, Beyoncé, the Kelce effect, spectator live streams, etc.) and to debate the ways in which American popular entertainments like the Eras Tour shape global conversations about gender, race, sexuality, economics, and politics.
