Human Rights Initiative

The Jacobs School of Medicine is welcoming School of Law students to attend the Human Rights Initiative’s Annual Forensic Evaluation Training.
They are an organization run out of the medical school that collaborates with physicians, lawyers, social workers, and other stakeholders to perform forensic evaluations for asylum seekers. The purpose of these evaluations is to document physical and psychological evidence of torture that asylum seekers have experienced. In this way, we can bolster the likelihood that they will be granted asylum.
They are having a training later this month on Saturday, September 28th for anyone who would like to join! Information below:
Forensic Evaluation Training on Saturday, September 28th, from 8:30am to 1pm. The event will be held at the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus (955 Main St.), in the Active Learning Room, Room 1220. The training will be led by local experts in collaboration with Physicians for Human Rights.
This year, the Forensic Evaluation Training session has been condensed due to the addition of the AMTI modules. The AMTI Modules (Modules 1-5) linked here MUST be completed prior to attending this year’s training session. Completion of these modules should take roughly 5-6 hours (on 1x speed) and require you to complete a quiz at the end of each module. After completion of the quiz, you will receive a certification of completion for that module which you need to screenshot and send to us - you can email them to us at wnyhrc@gmail.com or upload them using the registration link at the bottom of the email. These AMTI modules will provide a foundation for the information that will be presented at the training session, will familiarize you with the forensic mental health and physical evaluation, and prepare you on how to write an affidavit.
Participation in our organization REQUIRES BOTH this in-person training and completion of the AMTI Modules, for both students and providers, so please do complete those and upload your certificates at the registration link below. You can view and complete the trainings here: https://asylummedtraining.org
The training is free and breakfast and coffee will be provided.
