MLK Day of Service - Rescheduled
Posted: Wed Jan 15, 2025 10:55 am
The deadline to register is January 22, 2025. Please complete the registration form here: Registration Form.
To honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the New York State Unified Court System - Civic Engagement, the Franklin H. Williams Judicial Commission, the Erie Supreme and County Court, and the University at Buffalo School of Law will host a Day of Service to promote civic engagement and volunteerism in the community. We ask each volunteer to commit to a minimum of 2 hours on the day. If needed, volunteers may split their time.
There will be a training session for all interested volunteers. If you cannot attend the live training, a recorded version will be available. The goal of the program is to provide free legal assistance to the community and offer a service opportunity to law students in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s legacy. Volunteers will work under the supervision of Anaiss Rijo-Lelonek, Esq. The program is limited to the commencement of uncontested divorce matters with no children and no property. Law students will assist the public in completing these forms, but you will not provide legal advice.
Law student volunteers’ service can count towards their clinical hours or pro bono hours. For pro bono hours:
1. You would need to have the supervising attorney fill out the pro bono affidavit for the hours: https://www.nybarexam.org/Admission/50H ... 4.2020.pdf
2. You should report the hours to UB School of Law because we need them for reporting to the ABA and others, as well as for pro bono graduation cords: Additional Pro Bono Work - School of Law - University at Buffalo
Any Questions can be emailed to Dean Lee – jamilale@buffalo.edu
