The Environmental Impact of War
This course will explore the intricate link between armed conflicts and the environment.

This course explores the physical, chemical, and biological effects of war and preparation for war on the environment. We will delve into ancient, historical, and contemporary case studies worldwide, including the American conflict in Vietnam, deforestation, munitions pollution, Iraqi oilfields, Sherman’s March to the Sea, the conflict in Darfur, the War in Ukraine, Gaza, and the recent war against Iran. Each week, there are assigned class readings, including journal articles and laws/regulations related to war, war conduct, and the effects of war on the environment, which are required as course material. Links to assigned readings or copies of journal articles are provided on UB Learns. Presentations by invited guest speakers studying the effects in Kashmir, Gaza, and Ukraine will enrich the course
