00:00:00 - Early career and choosing UB Law

Play segment

Partial Transcript: I always had ambition to pursue the law. I started as a motorcycle policeman with the BPD. I was a pilot in WW2 and was able to afford college under the G.I. Bill of Rights. I attended Law School during the day and bounced law books on the motorcycle at night until I got a desk job with the police department. I could not have gone out of town and continued to work at the same time. I was fortunate to attend UB Law School, a respected school. Alan Carrel guided me and chose me as one of the designees for tonight. I enjoyed law school and made many friends who honor me.

Partial Transcript: My Law School background enabled me to run for Erie County Sheriff in 1970. I had been Chief of the BPD Narcotics Squad, I testified in Washington on Organized Crime, became publicly popular, and was elected. I served as Sheriff until 1977 after 23 years with the BPD. The main reason for my success was my UB Law education. Dean of the Law School, Jacob Hyman, just passed away. He was a very fine gentleman. I was attending Law School, studying, and working full time. I made many fine acquaintances and associations with people and students; some of whom excelled in the public arena. There were many, many small experiences I appreciated. The main thing is I was accepted to Law School and it has proven to be a tremendous experience. It helped me out tremendously in life.
