2000 Edwin F. Jaeckle Award: Hon. Vincent E. Doyle '56

Segment Synopsis: UB Law Alumni Association President and Dean of Law School introduce award ceremony for Hon. Vincent Doyle for the 25th Jaeckle Award. Patrick C. O'Reilly: Introducing head table, starting from right: Ernest Norman, Program Chair; Lynn Clarke, Secretary of Law Alumni Assoc.; Hon. Michael Battle, VP of organization; Hon. Eugene Pigott; Dean Nils Olsen; Hon. Vincent Doyle; Alan Carrel, Vice Dean; Hon. Hugh Scott, US Magistrate Court Judge; Ilene Fleischmann, Assoc. Dean; Ken Manning, previous Law Alumni Association President. Nils Olsen: On behalf of faculty, staff and students, welcomes everybody. Discussing renovations of O'Brian Hall by February, with 5 new classrooms and building of court room on campus. Olsen on UB renovations: Anticipates opening the courtroom for business, not just for moot court. Much funding for renovations and changes in law school paid for by alumni. Raised more than $6 million under leadership of Mary Ann Rogers. Olsen: This past year, UB led nation among law schools in a one year increase in applications, 40 percent increase from last year to this year. Extraordinary diversity of faculty. Olsen announcing that under William Greiner's leadership, construction of apartment style residences for undergraduates, dedicating 2 or 3 of the buildings to law student use. Other law schools in NYS (Columbia, NYU, Cornell) offer dormitories for law students instead of apartments, UB step ahead with approx. 300 beds. Olsen announcing that after lunch, "We will be honoring the real reason we are here, which is honoring Justice Doyle."

Segment Synopsis: O'Reilly on Doyle: An example of what Alumni Association stands for and is role model for professional achievement. O'Reilly on Doyle: Audience knows Doyle as successful trial lawyer. On matrimonials, Doyle is the "real article" as O'Reilly's grandmother would say. Brought practicality, intelligence and equity to matrimonials. He did what was right. O'Reilly. on Doyle: In 1995 became Admin. Judge for the 8th Judicial District, had a lot of creativity and innovation. Had been working with new matrimonial rules and developed new system for Erie County. His systems and accomplishments recognized statewide. O'Reilly on Doyle: Always finds time to give back to the law school. O'Reilly reads handwritten letter from Chief Judge Judith Kay on Doyle. O'Reilly jokes that Irish men don't hug this early in the day and Ilene Fleischmann would have to stand in. O'Reilly. reads quote from letter by Hon. Salvatore Martucci which says he would be great at herding cats.

Specialized courts which started in Buffalo becoming popular statewide, along with domestic violence courts and teleconferencing centers where Buffalo is at vanguard. Pigott on Doyle: Has instituted assistance programs for civil service tests. Pigott on Doyle: Abundant ability to bring people together for a common purpose. Sensitivity to litigants well known. Mentor to Admin. Judges in the 5th and 7th districts. Pigott on Doyle: System of justice hallmark of the 8th judicial district. Justice Doyle instituted Joyce E. Starkweather Award to honor personnel of the courts. Pigott on Doyle: Joins a pantheon of great people who have left law school and moved on to great things. Expressing gratitude.

Segment Synopsis: Joke: Doesn't feel he deserves award, but it beats getting indicted. Prefers accepting award to pleading not guilty. Doyle recalls Jaeckle story. Ed Jaeckle was a very prominent leader and law maker. JB told Doyle quintessential story that defined Jaeckle. Doyle honors his wife Joan, daughter Meghan and husband Tony, sons Kevin, Brian, and Vincent III. The most important person to Doyle in the last six years thanks to Sue Biller, his secretary, known as "Super Sue." It has been a bad year. Doyle lost many people very close to him. Appreciates award despite the fact it is a bad day. Jokes that his speech was 45 min with slides. Explains what the law school enabled him to do with his life. Remembers competitive spirit, the instructors, Dean Hyman's lessons on how to think like a lawyer. Learned what it meant to be a trial lawyer. Loved watching other trial lawyers. Within a year after law school, public defenders office created. Appointed one of the first two public defenders. Learned to think on his feet. Did that work for 20 years. For 20 years represented people, was their spokesperson. Job meant he didn't always agree with them, but to insist that it be extremely difficult to take freedom away. Work was fun. Would fight in the day with the guy on the other side, and party that night. Depending on how the case came out, people would either love you or hate you. Loved pleading for justice. Twenty-one years ago ran for Judge. Starting salary was $48,000. Jokes his wife told him that if he doesn't run for judge not to come home and complain about other judges. She encouraged him to run. Found luxury in pleading for justice. Job was more than he thought it was, a great way to make a living. Did that work until 6 years ago when Judge Denman requested he run for Admin. Judge. The Judicial Branch in the 8th Judicial District, he fights for what is best for his client. Wants people to respect his client, the Judicial branch. Wants the branch to be admired, but also wants it to improve. Installed new procedures and programs to help serve the people. Surprised he is honored by the law school, for doing something that he loves. "I am the one indebted to you today. And I thank you from the bottom of my heart." O'Reilly Conclusion: Thanks for coming. Thanks to those who have worked the program.
