Segment Synopsis: Perception of lawyers. Studied education, then decided on law. Challenging and fulfilling choice. Chose UB Law, SUNY system, affordable tuition, location. Married when she attended law school. Fondest memory was people she met. Mid-70's when she attended, acceptance and not competitive. No mentor. Favorite teacher was Ken Joyce, taught tax. Study groups and dinners. Lasting friendships, partners in firm from her class of 1979 (Dan D. Kohane, Lawrence M. Ross, Paul J. Suozzi, Roger L. Ross); challenges of law school makes for lasting friendships. Helped professor with a research project, clerked, taught research and writing program, all led to Hurwitz and Fine, there since 1979. Half-time with corporate law (Shelly Hurwitz) and half with litigation (Bob Fine). Two areas melded well together. Developed maternity policies for firm, ahead of its time. Took a 3 year leave. 3 children. Hurwitz & Fine supportive firm. Work life balance. Law jealous mistress. Marc Schulz, son, UB Law graduate. Most proud of what she's done for women, economic independence. Pres. YWCA, EveryWoman Opportunity Center, founding member Women's WNY Bar Association, WNY Women's Foundation. Reserved, low profile, private person, loves to cook and read. Would have been an archaeologist. Advice? Find a mentor. H&F has a formal mentoring program.
