00:00:02 - Richard Griffin on choosing law & UB Law School; highlights of studying law at UB

Play segment

Partial Transcript: After graduating Canisius College I was influenced to study law by a downstairs neighbor, a Supreme Court law clerk, and another, a family member who was a lawyer who impressed me as being very authoritative. UB Law School was local, it was affordable. I worked my way through college and paid for Law School myself. In retrospect it was a wonderful choice. As the Note Editor of the Law Review, I reviewed, edited, and approved notes that went into the Law Review, one of the most satisfying experiences. The other was the Senior's Legal Drafting contest. It was sponsored by a bank and there were awards for the winners. The subject was "Pretermitted Heir Statute". We had to draft a proposed law to cover that situation. I won first prize; I was shocked.

Partial Transcript: I got married during the Winter Recess of my Freshman year at Law School and in my second year we had our first child on the eve of Dr. Lenhoff's exam in Legislation. The second child came a year later a few days before the exam for Donald Lubick's Tax Seminar course. I did very well in both exams; I got the highest mark in the seminar. Dean Hyman was wonderful. I took his Constitutional Law course and the seminar in Home Rule Local Government. He was a marvelous teacher. After Law School he participated as one of the advisors on the School Desegregation case in the '70s. I tried that case. I also got to know him socially and was fortunate to deliver commentary on his life at a memorial after his passing.
