Required MS Word Training for LAWR, Software & Services

Post by Assoc Dir Law Lib »

Welcome, Class of 2023!
My name is Brian Detweiler and I am the Student Services and Legal Technology Librarian here in the Law Library. I am writing to let you know about some training you will be required to complete in preparation for your Legal Analysis, Writing and Research (LAWR) class through a company called Procertas. You should be receiving an email from them shortly at your UB email address, if you have not already, with details about activating your account. If you do not hear anything in this regard by the end of the week, please let me know!
Your LAWR Professors are asking you all to complete the Word, Word Brief, and Word Memo training modules and assessments prior to Orientation. They are available here: https://ltaweb.azurewebsites.net/Incidents/Index. Please note: You are welcome to complete the other trainings on Excel, PowerPoint, and PDFs, but only the Word modules are required.
**Mac users, if you need to change the operating system, please click on the Settings option that appears when you hover your cursor over your email address in the top right corner of the Modules page**
Before beginning your trainings and assessments through Procertas, I would recommend downloading the latest version of Microsoft Office 2019 from the UB IT website: http://www.buffalo.edu/ubit/service-gui ... ading.html if you do not already own this software, or if you have an older version of it.
Please note: The University has discontinued its Symantec anti-virus software license, effective 8/13/20. Mac users can download Sophos or AVG antivirus software using the links on the UB IT website should you not already have an antivirus program installed on your machine. Windows 10 users are advised to use Windows Defender: http://www.buffalo.edu/ubit/news/articl ... etail.html I apologize for the confusion. If you already downloaded Symantec from UB IT, there is a link to uninstall on the page.
Finally, you should all have received folders with database activation codes in the mail as part of your on-boarding materials. Please register for accounts with Lexis, Westlaw, CALI, and West Study Aids using your UB email addresses as soon as possible. (The West Study Aids flyer has a general URL that is kind of confusing, so please use the link on this page instead: https://research.lib.buffalo.edu/west-study-aids, sign in with your UB credentials to access the site, and use the link on the top right-hand side of their landing page to create your account.) More information about these services will be forthcoming before Orientation, so be sure to keep an eye out for future postings on SIP.
In the meantime, if you have any questions or issues as you register for your accounts and go through your Word training, please contact me via email at briandet@buffalo.edu.
Thanks and all the best,
Brian
