I hope you are all having a nice, restful break. My name is Peter Evancho, and I am a 2L at the Law School. Paige Roseman, another 2L, and I are trying to start a joint student organization in collaboration with the Jacobs School of Medicine. The mission of this club, the Buffalo Health Law Society, is to encourage medical students and law students to explore the intersection of medical and legal issues to facilitate interprofessional collaboration. The Buffalo Health Law Society will provide opportunities for the entire JSMBS and UB Law student bodies to cultivate an understanding of the synergistic nature of law and medicine and provide tangible examples of how doctors and lawyers can collaborate and use their collective knowledge to advance health justice. Event ideas include but are not limited to legal ethics discussions; health law career panels; opportunities to shadow lawyers in court; lectures from the MedLaw Partnership of WNY; volunteer opportunities in legal settings; health law lecture series: medical negligence/malpractice, informed consent, abortion, telemedicine, HIPAA compliance, etc. This will provide a great opportunity to participate in various programming and networking activities in the broad field of health law.
