Student Conference Assistant in The Baldy Center for Law and Social Policy

The Baldy Center for Law and Social Policy at the University at Buffalo School of Law is an endowed academic center for interdisciplinary research. The mission of The Baldy Center is to advance interdisciplinary research on law, legal institutions, and social policy. It does so by supporting research projects, conferences, workshops, fellowships, visiting scholars, speakers, and other initiatives.

The Baldy Center is hiring a conference assistant to work for conference grant awardee Prof. Emerita Martha McCluskey to support her forthcoming conference to be held June 2022. The position begins in late September 2021 at approximately 3 hours per week during fall 2021, increasing to 5 hours per week in spring 2022 as the conference date approaches, at a maximum of 9 hours per week. The rate is $14 per hour. The student assistant will have significant flexibility in arranging the work schedule, though it will be important to keep up with tasks on a weekly basis.

The conference student assistant is responsible for working with Prof. McCluskey on all organizational aspects of conference development, including record keeping, correspondence with scholars, travel/food/hotel information management, and other conference support tasks as assigned. The student assistant will coordinate with Baldy Center staff to make logistical arrangements.

Applicant must be a UB student, enrolled in a graduate program (PhD, MFA, or professional degree program preferred), and eligible to work on campus (http://www.buffalo.edu/administrative-s ... yment.html). International students and domestic students are welcome to apply.

Qualifications include required and preferred skills and experience.

Required:
1. Interest in interdisciplinary and law research.
2. Ability to communicate clearly and at a professional level with international scholars and UB administration.
4. Ability to work independently and reliably.
5. Well-organized and detail oriented.

Preferred
1. Experience carrying out administrative tasks in either a work or extracurricular setting.
2. Interest in social and economic justice or public policy.

Consistent with current UB COVID protocols (https://www.buffalo.edu/coronavirus/hea ... lines.html), the position may include some in-person meetings and tasks, though it will primarily involve Zoom supported remote operations. Through the fall and winter (and perhaps through the spring) meetings with Prof. McCluskey will be remote via zoom. The conference may take place in person, online, or in a hybrid format.

The conference assistant will be supervised by Prof. McCluskey, and report to The Baldy Center for all HR and timesheet related activities.

Hiring paperwork will include UBF forms, tax forms, and the I-9 form, which calls for specific documentation (https://www.uscis.gov/i-9). You must have these documents on hand at time of hiring. Time sheets are submitted via email biweekly. Payroll follows the UBF hourly payroll calendar (http://www.buffalo.edu/administrative-s ... ndars.html).

To apply, please submit a letter of application, your resume, and the names of three UB references. Please email all files to BaldyCenter@buffalo.edu, formatted as [LastName_FirstName_FileName]. You may email BaldyCenter@buffalo.edu with any questions. The application deadline is September 12, 2021, decisions will be made by September 22, and the position begins by the end of September.
